Galata Tower
The Galata Tower is one of the oldest towers in the world. From the very top you will get one of the best views of Istanbul.
The first Galata tower was built of wood in 528, to serve as a lighthouse. In 1348, it was rebuilt by the Genoese, under the name of "Tower of Christ".
During the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the tower was taken by Sultan Mehmet II.

Dimensions
Its height, of only 61 meters, is not that important. It is the diameter and width of its walls that are truly striking.
The diameter of the tower at its base is 16.5 meters outside and 8.9 meters inside. This difference indicates that the walls are 3.7 meters wide at its base.
The width of the walls decreases as you go up, reaching only 8 inches at the top!

Our opinion
By reaching the top of the Galata Tower, you will get the best view of Istanbul. If you want to get there on a remarkable trip, you can take the Tünel funicular from the Galata Bridge.
If you want to spend a special evening, the Galata Tower organizes dinner shows, with open bar. Their price is around 65 €.
