Hagia Sophia
The Hagia Sophia or, as the Turks call it, "Ayasofya", is the symbol of Istanbul. Built during the reign of Justinian between 532 and 537, it is one of the most beautiful masterpieces of Byzantine art.
Between 1204 and 1261, Hagia Sophia was the Pope's church. In 1453, it fell into the hands of the Ottoman Empire and it was transformed into a mosque. The Ottomans then endowed it with four minarets, a theological school and a public dining room.
In 1935, Atatürk transformed the temple into a museum .

Interior
The interior of the church is impressive: the dimensions of the main hall (70 meters by 74 meters), diffused lighting, huge decorative medallions and monolithic columns will leave you speechless.
On the second floor of the basilica you will find various mosaics of great historical interest. The most prominent mosaic shows Emperor Constantine and Empress Zoe venerating Christ.
In addition to the mosaics, you can see on the second floor the tomb of Enrico Dandolo, Duke of Venice, who died in Constantinople in 1205.
